Full-time reporter with expertise in Norway and the region
About the Role
Investigate Europe is looking for a dynamic and experienced Scandinavian reporter with a focus on Norway to join our growing team. We are a cross-border collective of journalists publishing with leading media partners across Europe. Headquartered in Berlin, Investigate Europe is an entirely digital operation that seeks to engage European readers by combining Investigate Europe cross-border coverage with national media stories. Core coverage areas include technology and democracy, defence and security, economic and social inequality, digital privacy and much more. Investigate Europe launched in 2016 and today has reporters in 12 countries, and is an independently owned, mission-driven organisation, funded by charitable groups and readers around the globe.
We are now looking for a reporter to work in a full-time staff position, with a particular knowledge of Norway and the region. The ideal candidate will have both exceptional investigative skills and deep experience in reporting on politics, defence and legal systems in Norway.
Responsibilities
- Produce a combination of investigative scoops and mid- and long-range cross-border stories that provide deep analysis and major revelations about the current challenges facing Norway and the region.
- Bring, build and maintain an extensive network of relevant sources and contacts locally, nationally and globally
- Collaborate with other Norwegian national outlets and regional titles to enhance regional coverage.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with local media outlets and contacts, along with community groups and stakeholders to produce underreported stories with impact.
- Collaborate with the editors and audience engagement to develop outreach strategies for stories, including creating multimedia and social media content and reporting
- Work flexibly and professionally with diverse cross-border investigative teams across Europe
Skills & Experience
- Proven experience in producing high-quality news and long-form stories for reputable and established media outlets in Norway.
- At least 5 years experience. Position would suit a mid-career or senior journalist.
- Proven ability to generate original story ideas and present them in digital formats.
- An understanding of national and European audiences.
- Excellent time management and self-motivation, with the ability to work independently.
- Can work to deadlines.
- Solid knowledge of media law and its application in reporting.
- Experience in EU affairs
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in Norwegian and English; additional European languages are a plus.
About You
- Strong track record of writing news and/or investigations in accessible prose with nuance and context
- High-level of investigative skills and established proficiency at producing scoops, agenda-setting analyses and in-depth investigative articles
- Expertise in using documents, data, and other journalistic tools
- Ability to communicate succinctly and clearly in audio or video formats and on social platforms to amplify your written stories
- Ideally, you’ll have a demonstrable ability to bring a diverse perspective to this role
- Knowledge of and ability to report about other Nordic countries a plus. We would also consider reporters based in Denmark or Sweden as long as they meet other criteria detailed in this ad.
