German Website Assistant and Translator (Freelance)

Investigate Europe, a cross-border journalism cooperative, is looking for a freelance German website assistant and translator (English to German).

About IE: With a presence in over a dozen European countries, our team works on in-depth investigations for several months. In the recent past, we have dealt with topics such as climate hypocrisy, for-profit elder care and migration. We publish our articles in a number of languages with media partners across Europe, and we also publish original material on our website in four languages: English, German, French and Italian.

The role: The German website assistant and translator will work closely with the website editor, Germany-based reporters and translators for other language editions of the website (based in France and Italy) to ensure that the German website is up-to-date.

Responsibilities:

  • Consulting with team members to determine whether an upcoming article will be translated to German
  • Translating articles and website pages
  • Uploading translations and associated content – image captions, infographics, data – on WordPress
  • Updating the German IE website
  • Assisting with social media outreach and translation

The time requirement for this role varies depending on our publication schedule. However, we anticipate that it will average to about 5-10 hours a week. We will provide at least 48 hours notice for translation requirements.

Requirements:

  • Native level German; proficiency in English
  • Experience in journalism and/or media would be a bonus
  • Comfortable using WordPress or similar CMS
  • Knowledge of/interest in European affairs
  • Participation at planning meetings
  • Remote working

Remuneration:

  • €130 for each 10,000 characters translated (spaces included)
  • €15/hour for all administrative work, including uploading articles, social media planning and attending meetings
